What is Congo Week?

CONGO WEEK IS A WEEK OF ACTIVITIES THAT COMMEMORATES THE MILLIONS OF LIVES LOST IN THE CONGO CONFLICT WHILE CELEBRATING THE ENORMOUS HUMAN AND NATURAL POTENTIAL THAT EXISTS IN THE COUNTRY. COMMUNITIES THROUGHOUT THE GLOBE JOIN IN PARTNERSHIP WITH CONGOLESE EACH YEAR DURING THE THIRD WEEK OF OCTOBER TO SCREEN FILMS, HOLD TEACH-INS AND FORUMS, ORGANIZE RALLIES, HOST FUNDRAISERS, PUT ON CONCERTS AND UNDERTAKE MANY OTHER ACTIVITIES TO ELEVATE THE PROFILE OF THE CONGO THROUGHOUT THE GLOBE.

Why Congo matters?

THE CONGO FACES MANY SERIOUS CHALLENGES SUCH AS RESOURCE EXPLOITATION, POLITICAL INSTABILITY, VIOLENT WARS, AND THE OPPRESSION OF ITS PEOPLE. SINCE 2008, CONGO WEEK HAS GALVANIZED THE PARTICIPATION OF PEOPLE IN OVER 75 COUNTRIES AND 600 UNIVERSITY CAMPUSES AND COMMUNITIES.

Who are Friends of the Congo?

THE FRIENDS OF THE CONGO WAS ESTABLISHED IN 2004 TO WORK IN PARTNERSHIP WITH CONGOLESE TO BRING ABOUT PEACEFUL AND LASTING CHANGE WHILES RAISING THE CONSCIOUSNESS OF THE WORLD COMMUNITY ON THE CHALLENGE OF THE CONGO.

COLONY OF CONGO IS A global COMMUNITY RECLAIMING AFRICAN HISTORY AND CULTURE THROUGH ART AND RESEARCH. WE want to bring together activists, artist, students, and historians for the congo week event. As a LIVING ARCHIVE OF CONGO’S PAST, PRESENT, AND FUTURE, we envision a multi-sensory otabenga exhibition where audiences have fun whiles learning about the history of Congo, and join in solidarity with friends of the congo in addressing the greatest humanitarian crisis of our time.
